| Solution: Start with the ♠J and play the
♠3 from North. East cannot cover
with the ♠K or else Declarer can win the next trick in the north hand
and claim the rest of the tricks, If
East instead follows with the ♠2 then all Declarer has to do is play
the ♠A followed by another spade and East will be forced to play a club
into North. It is therefore East's
only hope to follow the first trick with the ♠10 - but declarer has a
counter! Declarer must now play the
♠A. If East follows with the
♠2 then Declarer can throw him in with a spade and East will be forced
to play a club into North. East must
therefore drop the ♠K under the ace to avoid this endplay. Unfortunately for the Defense East's
brilliant defense of following with the ♠10 and ♠K on the first
two tricks is not enough. On trick
three Declarer plays the ♥J, throwing West in.
West is now forced to play a spade into Declarer's ♠97 tenace. |
