| Solution: Start by
playing the ace of spades. West
cannot discard a club on this trick or all three clubs in the north hand
become good, so West must discard his final heart or diamond. Regardless of which of these cards West
discards on the first trick, Declarer discards the heart 6 from the north
hand. Declarer now plays the 2 of
clubs. West must play the seven or
eight, if he plays the four Declarer wins the trick with the six and cashes
the other high clubs. Assuming West
plays the seven or eight, Declarer wins the trick with the nine and plays the
eight of hearts. If West kept the
nine of hearts on the first trick
then East can duck this trick but then West is endplayed to lead into Noth's
club tenace. If East wins this trick
with the ace then he is endplayed, he must lead from his five and three of
hearts into South's seven and four. |
